Are you the type of person who uses loyalty cards and coupons? Millions of Americans save huge amounts of money each year simply by knowing about good deals.
And I’m here to tell you, right now, that this is a very good deal with regard to improving your attic insulation.
In fact, it seems that the utilities and government are falling all over themselves to give you incentives to upgrade the insulation in your attic!
The U.S. Government Tax Credit
Let’s start with the United States Federal Government. In recent legislation (IRA legislation) you receive a 30% tax credit when you upgrade your home’s attic insulation.
Take a look at this screen shot from their website:
https://www.energystar.gov/about/federal_tax_credits/insulation
Notice what I’ve marked in red:
The tax credit is 30% of the material used to improve your insulation.
The maximum rebate amount in one year is $1200. This is a HUGE tax credit!
Here is another Quote from the website…
Who can use this credit?
“Principal Residence Owners
Must be an existing home & your principal residence. New construction and rentals do not apply.
A principal residence is the home where you live most of the time. The home must be in the United States. It can include a house, houseboat, mobile home, cooperative apartment, condominium, and a manufactured home.”
How can I maximize my tax credits?
More info from the .gov website…
“Given the way the annual aggregate limits are structured, it may be prudent to spread your improvements over a few years. If your heating or cooling system is old, and you are considering a new air source heat pump, it is always wise to optimize your attic insulation first, so you don’t pay for more heating and cooling than you actually need. Making these upgrades together in one year would allow you a tax credit of up to $1,200 for the insulation and up to $2,000 for the heat pump. Similarly, you could combine a heat pump installation with window/door replacements. In that scenario, the $2,000 credit for the heat pump could be combined with tax credits up to $600 total for the windows/skylights plus $500 for two or more doors. If you replace your water heater the following year, you would be eligible for another 30% tax credit, up to $2,000 plus up to $600 if you need an electric panel upgrade to accommodate the new water heater.”
Tax Credit Example
As an example, suppose that your invoice for improving your attic insulation is $3800. A fair assumption is that about 70% of that amount can be considered material cost, which is $2660. The tax credit is 30%, which comes to $798.
And you still haven’t used up the available credit for this year!
As they said on late night TV… “But wait, there’s more!” There’s even more money available to many who are reading this article.
Check out these BIG MONEY INCENTIVES from Georgia Power and EMC co-ops in Georgia!
We’ll start with the largest electric utility company operating in Georgia.
For homeowners who are Georgia Power customers, check out this screenshot from their website:
Georgia Power Company is currently awarding homeowners a (maximum) rebate of $250 when you upgrade your attic insulation! There are a few conditions, so check out the website. The rebate is half the cost of the insulation, with a maximum rebate of $250.
In my experience, our clients have never not qualified for the maximum rebate. Keep in mind, this is a check mailed to your home. Not a credit on your electric bill.
If you live in Georgia, and you aren’t a Georgia Power customer, you may be a member of an EMC, “Electric Membership Co-op.”
Check out these rebates from two EMC’s located around Atlanta.
For homeowners who are Snapping Shoals EMC customers:
You’re going to receive a whopping $400 (maximum) rebate when you upgrade your attic insulation!
This is a huge deal! I’ve owned a home in the SSEMC territory for over 30 years, and I cannot recall a rebate this generous.
And it’s relatively EASY to qualify for this rebate. Take a look at this screenshot from their website:
Do you own your home in the Cobb EMC territory? This rebate is INSANELY GENEROUS!
Upgrade your attic insulation and you may qualify for $500! In my research, this is the largest rebate of any in my market territory.
Qualifying for this most generous rebate is more difficult than others mentioned in my article. Cobb EMC will require you to use an approved contractor from their list of contractors.
If your contractor isn’t listed on their site as an approved contractor, it’s likely that you will not qualify for the rebate.
Fortunately for us, Bird Family Insulation is an approved contractor, and you can see us listed on their website.
