Her post read, “We need our wall insulation improved. We have two rooms that are way too warm in the summer. We know it’s not an AC issue.”
When asked, “How do you know it’s not an AC issue?” The reply was, “We had it checked out, and the tech said it’s fine, it’s blowing cold air.”
Time and time again, we discover that a client’s HVAC machine is indeed blowing cold air. The issue is it’s not blowing enough air through the vents!
If you want more airflow from your heating and cooling vents, I’ve got good news for you: In almost every case, we can get more airflow from the vents in rooms that are stubbornly uncomfortable!
Let’s first rule out the easy stuff:
- Have you got at least 12” of attic insulation? We recommend 16” attic insulation for our Atlanta market.
- Look at your windows, especially those in direct sunshine. Are they protected with shades, blinds, or curtains for the summer sunshine?
- Do the uncomfortable rooms each have a (unblocked) supply air vent, AND a return-air vent?
- Maximize your current air flow. Are your vent dampers opened 100%? Are you consistently changing your HVAC filter at the recommended interval?

Beau learned from me, (I’m retired now) – and for many many years after introducing myself at the front door, I would say to my homeowner, “Take me to the room that’s most uncomfortable to heat or cool.” At Bird Family HVAC & Insulation, we incorporate some facets of air duct design into well over 50% of our insulation jobs, simply because insulation alone may not completely satisfy our clients in those instances, and air ducts in Atlanta homes are in such poor condition!
Sometimes getting improved air flow into an uncomfortable room is as simple as replacing the existing restrictive vent cover with a less restrictive vent cover. We’ve done this many times! This is very important with rooms that have a floor system above the ceiling. We can’t access the air duct, but we can make it less restrictive at the vent.
We also enlarge the air duct that is supplying the uncomfortable room. Using our Flowhood, we’ll test the entire air duct system beforehand, to confirm that we won’t deplete airflow from a neighboring room.
Some HVAC techs will actually slow down the fan speed inside the HVAC machine, to reduce airflow. It’s a quick and easy fix, but has detrimental consequences. This is done for lots of reasons, some common reasons for reducing fan speed are:
- Noise pollution from air rushing through the vents.
- Too much airflow getting into a room, (hitting the face of someone trying to sleep, etc)
- If it’s a newer hvac machine, sometimes they increase the size of the AC (more is always better, right?) while attaching it to the existing, older undersized air duct system.
On his initial appointment with you, Beau will visually evaluate your entire home, including your insulation and HVAC equipment and air duct design. As I mentioned above, gaining more airflow from the vents in a couple of uncomfortable rooms may be easier than you think!

Other solutions to improve airflow in air ducts include:
- Replacing a smaller air duct with a larger diameter air duct.
- Install a return-air vent in a room that doesn’t have a return-air vent. In fact, it’s RARE that we find an HVAC system that doesn’t benefit from needing MORE RETURN Airflow!
- Replace a restrictive air filter with a high-performance air filter. This usually includes a new filter box, to match the new filter. Another benefit: Improved Indoor Air Quality!
- Redesigning older air duct systems that use distribution boxes, with the highly efficient and performance oriented trunk-line system.
- In extreme cases, we install a sized-to-fit interior fan inside the air duct. This is a booster fan that pushes the airflow in extremely inaccessible air ducts and long distances.
- Redesign an existing air duct so that it is a dedicated run, from the HVAC machine straight to the uncomfortable room. Often, air ducts will be attached to another air duct, that is attached to another air duct, etc. That is a very poor design, but it’s common in older systems and diy scenarios. With a dedicated air duct, compare to the Disney “Fast Pass”, or after P.E., running to the water fountain first, to get the cold water before the rest of the class. In most cases, with a dedicated supply-air duct, you will get colder AC air, and more volume of air from the vent.
- Redesigning the sheetmetal hardware that attaches to your air ducts. We can remove a wye connector, flip it over, and reinstall it, and sometimes get enough improved airflow to an uncomfortable room to make all the difference. A wye connector allows a single air duct to be split into two separate air ducts. It is shaped like a “y”. Look at that letter, “y”. Do you see the long side of the letter is a straight line (efficient). The opposite side of the “y” has an angle (inefficient). We put the straight side of the wye pointed to the uncomfortable room.
- Removing hidden dampers. I’ve heard some hardcore profanity from Mr Homeowners when I’ve led them into their attic to show them restrictive dampers I discovered on their supply-air ducts. I’d hear something like, “I’ve been complaining for xyz years, paying for a maintenance contract on this system, and the techs keep telling me I need a new system! And you’re showing me dampers under the duct insulation – and that’s all I needed to do?” Shortly after covid lockdowns, I made a video of a homeowner’s hidden air duct dampers, and it has over 2.5 million views! I am telling you, Atlanta’s residential air ducts are a real problem that go ignored.
- Straighten-out kinks and twists in flexible ducts that restrict airflow. Remove excess length in flex ducts, for quick efficient delivery of your conditioned air. (One of our most common resolutions that has helped 100’s of uncomfortable Atlanta homeowners.)
With a combination of remedies, there’s a very big chance that Beau and our team at Bird Family HVAC & Insulation can get your uncomfortable rooms feeling just right, and do it affordably! It may require adding insulation, and doing a half-day’s work with your air ducts. All of which is dramatically more affordable than what the HVAC salesman is telling you!
Some homeowners can’t get beyond the Law of First Tell. Because the HVAC tech said the system is fine – nobody is going to change that homeowner’s mind. That’s ok, you’re open to learning new things, right?

There’s a small cost for this evaluation, but it will take all of the guess work away! Beau will tell you how much airflow your HVAC machine is designed and capable to produce, and compare that with what you are actually getting from your vents. Finally, he will discuss recommended improvements in your air ducts and what you should expect.
